Trading Standards – TV Licensing Scams

Fake emails purporting to be from TV Licensing are being used to lure people into giving away their bank details.

Scammers are sending fake emails using the official TV Licensing logo. The first email encourages the recipient to update their direct debit details.

In a second dodgy ‘TV Licensing email, scammers tempt recipients into clicking on a link and giving away their bank details under the guise of claiming a refund.

The email reads: ‘You are eligible to receive a tv license refund but due to invalid records, we were unable to credit your account. Please submit the request and allow us 5-7 days to process it.’

The URL included in the email starts with www.tvlicensing.co.uk (the official TV Licensing website) but also includes ‘.cs.update.your.licence’ followed by a series of random letters.

TV Licensing confirmed that these emails are not genuine. It said genuine emails and letters are personalised to include information such as your name, part of your postcode or your licence number.

Please remember to report any scam to Action Fraud 0300 123 2040.
If you have actually been the victim of a trader or scam such as the above and need help, or you require consumer advice, please call the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline 0808 223 1133

Croydon Cats Protection – Christmas Bazaar & Jumble Sale

The need for fundraising for Croydon Cats Protection is greater than ever. As with many other pets in the current climate some people are abandoning their cats, many of which were sadly acquired during lockdown.

Cats Protection in England has over 250 branches and 36 centres country wide. Each branch is run by unpaid volunteers who devote themselves to the welfare of homeless cats and kittens needing our help. We also promote and can help financially with the neutering of cats and kittens (subject to eligibility).

We always have volunteer vacancies for Helpline Operators, Fosterers, Trapping Assistants and Fund-raising Event Helpers. Even if you can only spare a few hours a week we will be pleased to hear from you.

Please visit the Croydon Cats Protection website for more information on how to help.

Power for People Update November 2022

Local engagement in this campaign has really been such a game changer. It is so important to have supporters from the grassroots pushing this Bill to the top of the political tray.

That was Wera Hobhouse MP at our first community energy event in Parliament last week.

Ms Hobhouse sat on a panel with Hilary Benn MP, David Johnston MP, Will Handford (The National Trust’s Renewable Energy Programme Director), Tom Fyans (CPRE’s Interim CEO) and our Director Steve Shaw.

With all seats taken, people were packed in, crowded out the door and down the corridor. Some MPs and Peers who turned up were unable to physically enter the room – some stood in the corridor listening for over an hour, whilst others came back at the end to speak with us, offering to do more to help. This was a real show of the campaign’s strength in the halls of Parliament.

Halfway through the evening during the Q&A, Labour’s Energy Minister Dr Alan Whitehead announced that the Labour Front Bench are fully behind our improved version of the Local Electricity Bill, which we plan to have introduced into Parliament imminently (more info on that soon).

Thank you for backing this campaign and believing in it. As Wera Hobhouse said, you are the strength of this campaign. We have 312 MPs on board now but we need more support and activity to get the Government onside and see this over the line.
